Volvo C70, "Mk 1" or "Mk 2"
Discussion
The original C70 was built on the old '850' platform and you could get it as a hardtop or convertible with various petrol engines up to the T5.
The later C70, built on the Focus platform was only available as hard top convertible, you could get a diesel though.....
No problems really with either of these models that cannot be dealt with by a dealer (you need to research the best as there are some bandits), a good local specialist or yourself with some competence.
www.volvoforums.org.uk and www.t5d5.org are good starting points.

Personally I like the MK1 but then a) I own one, and b) I love the 850 on which is based.
I certainly think the Mk1 is more robust than a Mk2 but they do have their problems.
I don't like the fact the MK2 is not available as sole coupe (and don't say a metal folding roof makes it a coupe - I'm sorry it simply doesn't - namely the 5 tons of strengthening and roof mechanism prevent this). if you're hell bent on a convertible then def get a Mk2 - the MK1 convertible frankly drives like a blancmange,
but a tidy mk1 T5 GT coupe is tasty bit of kit -If I were to buy another though, I'd ditch my auto in favor of a manual - Auto blunts the performance too much

Disclaimer: I have a mk1 coupe.
They're very different cars. From your original post I don't know if you're interested in coupe or convertible or what engine. If you're looking at the convertible, the second generation is a very clever roof and I think it's a good looking car. Much prettier than any other four seat folding hard top. Give us some more information as to what you're looking for.

I've just bought a mk2, having looked at both. It's leaps and bounds better. Comfort, performance and handling are so much better.
Personally I think it's more a case of mk1 V mk3!
I take it you haven't driven both?Personally I think it's more a case of mk1 V mk3!
Mk1 250bhp, 1500 Kg
Focus based C70 225bhp 1700Kg
Comfort wise, the ford version is stunning and cornering is surprisingly good too but they're no sports car.
