Geartronic problems.

Hi,

My brother just brought me back a 2003 Volvo V70 2.4 D5 geartronic from Liverpool as I am currently having to stay in hospital in Belgium where I live. The car behaved perfectly until he got onto the motorway in France where it started vibrating once you released the gas pedal and the rev counter jumped around between 1.5 and 2.2k rpm. He stuck the transmission into its "Manual" mode and off it went again.
He then found himself having to reverse up a steep hill, and guess what...well nothing. It wouldn't move an inch. He drove down again forwards, but then, back on even ground, realised that the gearbox had no pull anymore. He also tells me that after leaving the car rest (switch off engine for +/- 20mins.) it had sufficent pull to get hin onto a legal parking spot, where I told him to leave it until I got out of hospital and could take care f it.
My question: have I equiped my little brother with enough money to bring me back an
expensive 1.7tonnes of useless metal?

you can try swapping out the fluid but it sounds too shagged already.
