Will need a new car soon, seriously looking at the V70 geartronic say 2011 onwards. Not a lot of D5's out there, even less D4's, but loads of D3s. Are these all 5 cylinders? Whats the better unit. I had a S60 D5 and loved it, not bothered if the D5 is 205 or 215 Hp as she'll be chipped anyway. I'll be doing about 20k a year, mix of town and motorway. Whats the best option??

Not at all confusingly D3, D4 & D5 are all 5 cylinders. The D3 & D4 are 2.0 litres tuned to different levels, 150 bhp (D3), 180 bhp (D4).

You could always upgrade the performance by chipping one with Polestar. Polestar will not invalidate any remaining Volvo warranty unlike other ones.

They are all 5 cylinders, with different bhp. The simplest way of determining what is best for you is deciding whether you want more power to the detriment of poorer fuel economy. We went for the D5 because I wanted a high powered unit, but in hindsight, wished we went for the D3 to gain better economy - we do 20K p.a. too. But they are all delightful to drive. Do we use the full 205bhp? Of course not, we are trying to drive more economically and the D3 or D4 would have given us the same quality of driving but for less money. If fuel economy is not a consideration, get the D5, the power is great!

The D4 give about the same power as the earlier D5, the D5 was upgraded when the other engines were introduced.
