Ive finally been put off buying an auto s60 d5 by finding out from Volvo that one for sale on autotrader has gearbox issues.
So I'm on the look out for a manual, much to the mrs disgust.
My question is how do I know the DMF is on its way out

Engine vibration and noise at low revs. DMF is a huge pain and is reason to steer clear of manual cars.

Asking how do you they are going to fail is a bit like wondering if you will die. It will happen but you just don't know when.

Really blimey, just read so much bad information on the autos I thought manual was the way to go.
I still can't make my mind up on a diesel or 2.0l petrol either. Making my brain hurt

Here lies the problem of reading too much on the Internet. Both manuals and autos can have issues so go with what suits you.

I think you have a point there. Can be a be a bit of a pain liking cars sometimes.
Be easier if I wasn't interested I'd just buy anything

I replaced the clutch, slave cylinder and DMF on my 02 S60 D5 for around £1100.
Auto`s have their own problems, depends on how old the car is.
I would avoid a pre 2005 geartronic like the plague, they have big issues which Volvo seem to have got on top of by `05.
Volvo claim they are sealed for life and do not require fluid changes, this is bullst so if going auto I would get the fluid changed ASAP.
When test driving the geartronic make sure you take it for a good long run as problems often don`r show up until it`s properly warm. (Around 50 miles or so).
Look for any clunkiness or hesitation selecting gears and if it does then walk away!

Clutch and DMF is expensive to replace but still cheaper than replacing an autobox.
Mine was actually a failed slave cylinder (known weak point) and then it was found the DMF had excessive play so that was done at the same time.
At 145000 miles when it failed and the mechanic said there was still quite a bit of life in the clutch plates, if the slave hadn`t pissed fluid all over them, so not bad going for an ancient Volvo!

Have a look at Rawhides gearbox thread if you haven`t already:

If it was to be an auto prob s60 04/05 up.looking at a 2.0t auto at mo. unless I pick up an s80 auto cheap then I won't be so bothered about it.only going to spend 3 k tops so not so much about the money just don't fancy spending two thirds of the purchase price on a box if it goes bang
Any one had a 2.0t. What are they actually like to drive /fuel

Not got much experience of the 2.0T TBH.
You`ll get more S80 for your money as they are quite unloved compared to the S60.
S80 is more of a barge/cruiser than the S60, not that the S60 is anything like sporty!

If you do big miles/ lots of motorway stuff then the S80 is a very nice place to be.
Rear legroom is the S60 is piss-poor for the size of the car.

It's for the wife to mooch about in. She's not bothered how big a car is.was looking at the s80 because of what I've read about the leg room in the s60.
Also thought I'd get more for money.if I were to go petrol it would be s60 2litre though.hoping it would be more economical than my e39 528 though
