Hey all, I'm a newbie here but reading around the forums it is evident to me that you guys have an incredible amount of knowledge between you! Therefore I felt this would be the best place to ask for help regarding my old dads motor!

Recently the car (S60 D5 2.4 diesel) has started kicking out black exhaust smoke at around 60mph at 2000rpm. from what i've read so far it could be either the intercooler or the fuel filter.

However I have been told that if it was the intercooler a whistling sound would be audible and there's no noise that we can here. I personally think it is the fuel filter and we're obviously looking to replace it however they are, as i'm sure you guys know, slightly different to your typical engine set up. The fuel filter itself is located under the car however we cant find any sort of bleed handle and have read that if you remove the filter before it is probably bled, you'll end up with your fuel gushing everywhere. I was wondering if any of you guys out there could advise on how to probably bleed the system in order to remove and replace the filter without further problems?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Rory.

IC fins will start to bend - need to have a good look, generally happens towards the lower portion.

You will need somebody else to listen for air leaks whilst you gently rev and blip the car rather than try and do both.

Whenever I have replaced the fuel filter on my old (2007) car it was on the offside rear in front of the wheel area NOTE it is really tight and feels like it will snap off - never bled it, simply removed old filter (no serious amount of fuel spillage), refitted new, turned on ignition, allowed it to prime, off with ignition, reprime for 2nd time, off then on again, reprime 3rd time and then crank, started as normal.

How old is it and how many miles?
Intercoolers on these are made from chocolate and are usually toasted by 120000 miles.
You will usually be able to see it bulging slightly and often there will be oily residue along the bottom of it.

If it looks OK then do the filter first as it`s a cheap job, standard intercooler with fitting on the D5 is around the £200 mark.
