Driving the car for the first time the other day, noticed a slight hum above 40mph sounded like it was coming from front. Immediate thought was tyre noise or worn wheel bearing. Odd thing is, when slightly on the brakes the noise disappears completely - so is this a wheel bearing or is it a brake issue?
Thanks.

Wheel bearing is my guess. As you brake the pressure of the pads on the disc will bring the dic back to a vertical position thereby re-alinging the bearing.
You've almost got it right! The front hub bearings are large double rollers. One set always wears before the other meaning that if you corner one way it will either increase or decrease the noise depending on which set of rollers are worn. The same effect is gained by pressing the brake pedal; it centres the hub and lifts the thrust off the worn bearing.
Common fault on Volvos.
