These have appeared on my radar - with lots of car available at less than £1k these seem like insane VFM. I did a dyno day at work a few weeks ago for a Volvo forum and having never spent much time around Volvos before I was pretty taken with the C70s and S60s in particular.

Now that I might be looking for a runaround, I couldn't believe just how little the earlier C70s go for. I'd go for one like a shot, but I do have a potential issue with the fuel consumption; my daily commute is about as un-ideal as you can get for a car. It's very short (4-5miles each way) and urban driving only. My last runaround (MG ZS 180) struggled to better 20mpg in these conditions, so I'm automatically assuming a C70 T5 is going to be a similar story.

Unless someone can tell me otherwise (hopefully biggrin )....

To be honest, having owned most engines in the C70, they are all pretty similar. The T5 is only slightly worse unless you really use the performance, the 2.0 and 2.4 N/A are almost identical.
I get about 25-30 for everyday use with my current manual T5 and my 2.4 N/A on a European holiday last year, was averaging about 38.

I have a 2000 C70 T5 with a manual box. I normally get about 400 miles from a tank which my back of a fag packet maths tells me is about 27mpg. I think the OBC tells me 26 so it's that sort of figure.

My normal commute is 1 mile to school, 2 miles to nursery and then 5 miles to work which is initially town and then a bit of sitting in traffic and then NSL. 25 minutes this morning including the two brief stops.

On a run it will exceed 30 when sat at 'normal motorway speeds' but that drops depending on your driving style and it's never going to be brilliant in town traffic. I've only got short journeys this week so I'll set the trip this afternoon and see what I get by the end of the week.

Sounds like I'd be in the mid to low 20's then. Be interested to here your results though. I just can't get over how much car there is for the money...there has to be a catch!

Trip has been reset so I'll see how many miles it says on Friday. I'll probably have done 60ish miles by then.

They like eating front tyres and are heavy on the suspension components. In 18 months I've changed a heater matrix, power steering reservoir, four tyres, driver's side track rod and track rod end. I've ordered the other side track rod and end and new drop links as well.

Seats are lovely and the stereo is great. A nice place to be and while not the sharpest driving car in the world it has turned me into a Volvo fanboy.

This was this morning. From Monday evening to Friday at work. Fifty miles and 25.8 mpg. It was 25.9 but I took too long trying to fit an iPad through the steering wheel to take the picture.

The fifty miles has all been short journeys, nothing over 60 mph and a fair bit of traffic. I've driven sensibly and only given it the beans once when leaving a 30 zone to get rid of a Focus that was trying to mate with me...
