Hi all,

I don't usually venture into this part of pistonheads but a colleague is having issues at a dealer and could do with some advice.

The car in question is a Volvo S80 D5 on a 56 plate. The car has been fantastically maintained and has full Volvo service history and has 86k on the clock.

I've been in the car numerous times with him and can vouch that the car has been driven very well and with a great deal of mechanical sympathy.

The trouble started last week. As we were coming back from our lunch the car started making an awful whining noise and lost all power. The engine warning light came on. The car was driven to the Volvo dealer in Sheffield who fortunatley was only a mile away.

A week prior the car had a timing belt change and service at the Wakefield dealership.

The volvo garage in Sheffield had it for three days and then sent the car to Wakefield. They claim they don't know what the problem is and Wakefield will deal with it. Although, the person working on it did mention cambelt tensioner.

The dealership in Wakefield has had the car since Friday and is now saying that the noise could be due to the scoring in the camshafts which is due to wear and tear, but they are still carrying on with the investigation. They have also found that the oil pressure is low.

Considering that the car has been with volvo since last Wednesday, I can't help but think that this is related to the timing belt change and the dealer is gearing up to wash their hands clear of it.

I can't help but thing that the cambelt has slipped and caused some damage. The question is how should he now proceed with this?

Is there any way to prove that this is related to the timing belt change and service?

For the time being he has been given a courtesy car and the investigation is still ongoing.
