V40 Heater issues...

Hi all,
Right, as of yesterday I am once again a volvo owner (first two cars being 340 and 440, followed a few years later by a 480) - picked up an old, but decent enough V40 2.0T CD (1998 my) to see me through a house move. So far all is good, with the one exception being a non functioning heater (which I did know about when I bought the car).
Shouldn't be an issue in the shorter term with summer on its way (?!), but it's just one of those jobs which I would like to sort asap.
Does anyone on here have any ideas (or has anyone experienced the same?) for a fix to this? The fans themselves do work, as does the air conditioning. All other electrics appear fine and coolant level and engine temperature are all okay.
Upon starting the car, a clicking sound does come from around the passenger side footwell - stopping only after a little fiddling with the fans/aircon - if that has any significant connection.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
