Volvo V70 D5 power loss over 3500rpm

Hi.......I have just bought a mint 172000 mile d5, it pulls really well and drives really smooth, however occasionally when making good progress through the gears revving to over 3500 there is a loud whirring noise and a drop in power....this doesn't always happen though.......any suggestions what it might be?
