My parents are looking for a diesel with a budget of up to £4.5k for the right vehicle.

Initially they were looking at 54/05 reg (163bhp Euro III) Volvo V70/S60 D5's (manuals), but all the vehicles that matched that criteria were either in Cornwall, South West Wales or in Wick!

Anyway, while searching, 07> S80's kept popping up in the same price bracket. Is there a reason for this? Are they bargains to snap up or time bombs waiting to happen?

So, what are they like in terms of reliability and fuel consumption (40+mpg)? Auto or Manual? Any electrical gremlins? Anything else I should know?

The autos have chocolate gearboxes, IIRC.

I have an 06/07 S80, it is an auto with the 163bhp diesel engine. Previusly had two s60 d5s including a 180bhp one. This os an auto of course but the most distressing thing has been the fuel consumption, even on a long run mid 40s is highly optimistic!

Mine has done 75k now and I have done about 3OK of those the only problem I have had was the EGR valve which was not cheap.....other than that it is a lovely car, pokey enough and very very comfortable.

The cheap ones all seem to have done high mileages so it seems like most other diesel Volvos they can take it quite well.

I've done 30k miles in my 07 S80 (08 model year) in the past 16 months and it's been great. I bought it as a cheap motorway mile muncher and it's great at that.

Very smooth, comfortable and quiet on motorway and seats are typically Volvo - supportive and comfortable. Virtually all have good specs including heated, electric leather seats, dual zone climate control, power mirrors etc and the Volvo high performance sound system is stunning, better than Audio Bose system. Very high on safety too.

The engine is much nicer than the 520d or Audi 4cyl engines, smoother and with a pleasant enough noise but as suggested above, it's not that efficient if you get the old school auto gearbox. On a run I get 38-42 depending on speed. Around town it's a dismal 28ish. It does weigh 1.7 tonnes so I guess that's not too bad.

It's been very cheap to service at local independent garage, at 100k miles is still perfectly tight, rattle free and pleasant.

I'd buy another one - it's great at what it does but it' not a sports car. Given it's less than half the price of a similar Audi or BMW it's great value and much nicer to sit in.

Having said that about fuel consumption, a very slow journey up the M1 last week did produce about 50 mpg at about 55 mph. For an automatic that's not bad.

Thanks for the replies chaps.

It's a toss up between a V70 D5 and an S80 2.4D. Looks like we'll be going down the manual route.

Just got to find one now, ideally being sold privately...easier said than done!
