Will be picking up a cheap 2003 V70 this week. Only issue is that there is a message displaying "SRS service immediately" (or something along those lines), but the red airbag light comes on at start up and goes out as normal.

Is this a fault or just a service reminder? The fact that the red light goes out leads me to think that the airbag would still operate normally.

I would hazard a guess the airbags have a 10 year life span and the car was made in 2003 - on the older models they have a sticker on the b pillar of the drivers door with an "expiry date" stamped in for all the airbags.

Is it the dashboard with silver rings around the dials or the older style one without any silver (just grey plastic)?

If the latter it could be the first signs of dry joints in the DIM (the electronic module in charge of gauges, information messages, and so on). Common on the earlier cars, fixed after the interior facelift when they added the silver surrounds to the instruments.

My 2002 S60 got well past the airbag inspection date without any messages to the effect...

^^ not this.

Volvo airbag expiry dates were done away with or extended indefinitely: http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/faq/ElectricalSRS.html...

It could be as simple as someone has removed the radio before disconnecting the battery, or unplugged a seat, or it could well be the DIM on the way out as suggested.

Ideally you need to have the codes read & cleared and then take it from there. It'll need to be done with Vida/Dice (the Volvo tool) or perhaps a BSR PPC. The Volvo specific forums might show someone local to you with the appropriate gear (I have this, but don't think I'm in your area).

Think it's the pre-facelift without silver rings. I'll have to read up on the DIM issues. Do they start displaying random messages then?

Picking it up tomorrow if all goes to plan so i'll know more then.

It can present in various ways: random SRS messages, no high beam tell-tale, fuel gauge weirdness, seat belt warning lights, etc. etc etc.

The good news is that they can be fixed for £50 (plus postage costs) so it's not the end of the world.

Cheers. You had me worried there for a moment until you mentioned it only costs £50 to fix!

Found a guy on the Volvo forums near me with the kit to reset warning messages, so between these two options I should be able to get it sorted.

Picking it up tonight, wonder what other issues it will throw my way.
