Hi,

I've got an early D5 V70 2.4D thats done 160k
It's hard to start when been stood for the night, usualy starts on the 3rd attempt after a bit of a cough and splutter!

It drives perfectly and pulls like a train, and once it's been started in the morning it starts first time for the rest of the day with no issues.

Whats the most likely issue? do they have glow plugs, or some king of fuel warming system?

A failing injector will cause this due to excessive leak of.

Disconnect the thin return pipes on top of the injectors and crank from cold and the faulty one will eject fuel from the injector smile

Forget the injectors, It's the glow plugs. They have probably been weak for all summer when they are not needed. It only needs to be one of them to be faulty at this time of year to prevent normal starting.

Make sure your getting a good flow from the intank pump as well.As these do fail normally after 8 years or 120k plus.Ive replaced quite a few myself for customers. But like others have advised first point of call would be a leak off check if no trouble codes present.

If it is injectors you should be able to get them overhauled but not cheap at around 200 each.Be sure the seats are cleaned and always fit new copper washer/seal.Good luck.

fks sake! I thought it was only the petrol V70 with the Magneti Marelli throttle body that had problems.
Who made the injectors for the Diesel D5 V70? It wasn't a bloody Italian company was it?

Thanks for the feedback.

Pardon my cluless-ness on the subject, but if its the injectors, how come the car runs perfectly when started, and starts 1st time all day long afterwards?

The system runs at very high pressure and must maintain this in the fuel rail to start straight away,a faulty injector leaks of line pressure and returns it to the tank, this happens slowly over night or if the car is left for extended periods and the poor starting is exaggerated with cold starting even with correctly working glow plugs.

Thanks for the help guys.

As the car was cheap, I'm not going to spend a fortune on it, I will just put up with its slow starting in a morning and carry on for now!
Still a great car

Cheers
