I have just bought a 1 owner 106k fsh V70 - took a bit of a punt as the PAS makes noises and judders when turning both ways, more pronounced when cold. Is this likely to be the pump? Needs a wheel bearing too but apart from that drive really well - 2.5 turbo engine goes like a train and very tight, so otherwise a good car. Anyone have any ideas on the steering?

Have a look in the fluid reservoir and see if the fluid is frothing. There is a plastic T piece inside, near the top of the reservoir, which can fall off and cause these symptoms. If that, you will be able to see the brass end of the pipe and, if you fish around inside, you will find the T piece in the bottom of the reservoir.
If that, it's a quick and easy fix.

How do you spot the plastic T piece? I had a look in there and all I could see was the fluid. Do I need to get some surgical gloves and have a poke around? It would be great if it was as easy as that....

I just used a screwdriver and poked around in the bottom until I could feel the loose part. If the T piece is off, you will see the brass coloured end of the pipe inside the reservoir which is the end of the top pipe coming into the reservoir. I think it's the fluid return pipe.

Ended up being the PAS pump, just had that changed along with wheel bearing, so looking forward to trying her out.

I suppose cheapest option was worth a try. It cured two of my C70's but the third one had to have a pump and a rack.

Thanks for the tip, you're right always worth the cheap option! Glad I didn't have to fork out for a rack! Yet!
