Back in the day when my dad had reached the 50's and I was a young "go getter" he used to trust me to buy his cars for him and I used to buy him Volvos because they were virtually indestructable.

I used to buy him one, and he used to use and abuse it, and after 7 or eight years the " black death" killed it and I bought him another one.

He loved them.

Fast forward twenty years or more, having had almost every type and brand of car, not including French however, I'm mad but not stupid, I started looking for something reliable, built like a brick outhouse, and which I could relax knowing that its reliable.

Having looked at my own car history and being cognisant of the reputation of other car brands I started looking at Volvo's.

So I've bought myself one.

It's an 52 plate S80. 2400 cc 140 bhp, manual, 55,000 warrantied miles with full service history. 10 months MOT and two months tax. Cam belt done, and nothing whatsoever wrong with it. It cost me £1049. ( I paid £1050 but found a pound coin in the boot)

Actually thats not true, it took me a week of critical examination but I found a slight split in the top engine mounting. Thats a £15 bush that is.

In the last week I have become addicted to heated seats.

I love this car. I know that when I get in it in the morning it will start. I know that it will be warm and comfortable, and that errant pedestrians will bounce off its ample bonnet and flanks thus the car will protect me from the general hoi palloi.

I have finally turned into my dad.

Did he have it right all along?

Cheers,

Tony.

He got something wrong. If he had looked after them, they would have lasted considerably more than 7 or 8 years..

Nothing wrong with it! My dad has had a sucession of Volvos over the last fifteen years. Eight I think is the current count apart from a brief period of Alfa ownership which ended in rust.

Last year I bought a Volvo. While it's not silver, a diesel or an estate he commended me on the purchase! I also have an MG like my dad.
