So I am now living quite rural with two ways out to work both involving climbs up to high moorland roads and have another little one on the way so do not fancy being marooned if we get a spate of bad weather I cannot afford a 4x4 / AWD of any sort at present so would like to fit some winter tyres all round and would prefer to just get some steelies to do a straight swap and keep the summer tyres on the alloys but I am unsure of what I can fit size wise ?

Depending on what year/model/spec your V70 is, I'm pretty sure you can fit 16" rims with 205/55/16 tyres. I have a set of these with Michelin Alpins that came from a P2 V70.

I currently have 225/45/17 Kleber Quadraxer on the D5 as an all year round tyre, I believe there are other good (better?) all season tyres available in that size.

I'm pretty sure 16's will fit the bill - I know that some models were fitted with 16's, police spec cars were generally fitted with Metis alloys for example.

A cheap set of alloys may well be easier to source than steel wheels.

I did the same a couple of years ago. There is some guidance in the car's manual about what size winters are recommended, but I spoke to the service manager at my local dealership and he said it didn't really matter, so I managed to get a set of 4 Mettis wheels off eBay for 80 GBP which came with some serviceable Yokos on them. I ran them for a couple of months and then slung some Nokians on them for the Winter months.

My advice is see what comes up on eBay - the advice is had was the 16" Mettis wheels are common as muck and not great looking so can be had quite cheap. I keep the Thor ones for Summer.

Edit to add - just did a search amd there is a set of Mettis on eBay for 99 ending in 1 day.
