getting rid of my 2005 discovery SE as its running costs were a joke. 5 grand this year alone on blown turbo and suspension failure and its only done 70k miles. was warned electronic brake was on its way out too!! further 2 k to fix.

so looking at xc70 but then saw there is a cheaper and better mpg 'drive' version

question is... is the Drive version just too neutered to be any fun? On paper it doesn't really have that much less power, an extra second on 0-60, 5pmh less top speed but saves massively on MPG. I'm very worried that as the 'drive' version does NOT have full 4 wheel drive it wont be any good in winter and a bit of a damp squib. (baring in mind the Discovery aint that fast but is capable of overtaking when pushed hard so not looking for Audi style of speed)

Its proving tricky to find a dealer that has both for me to compare back to back in a test drive

Anyone driven them both and made a choice?

I live in the city but drive 'up north' to the islands at least once a month enjoying all the 'non' luxuries of our CalMac Scottish ferry services! so need something spacious, reliable and unusual! (or i'd just by a Pathfinder or Outlander)

what do you think XC70 or XC70DRIVe?

many thanks!

I swapped from an 05 Disco into a D5 205 XC70 and I've been very pleased with the change, and extra 10mpg plus is very welcome.

Fitted a set of Nokian Wintrac winter tyres last winter and it was great in snow, sure the Disco would be better but the XC is good enough for 99,9 % of my use.

It's definitely the xc60 for me. Beautiful car but very dispointed that Volvo franchised dealer simply wouldn't entertain any sort of deal whatsoever so sadly it's a 'no sale'. They agreed my discovery was immaculate, low miles and a great example but still would only offer me 2 grand under the lowest cap/parkers guide price and they refused to take even a single penny off price of the xc60. They actually offered me same price as rip off 'we buy any car' site so I may end up keeping the discovery a while longer. Being offered 10grand for a low mileage SE discovery with sat nav, build in roof DVD, etc etc is just crap. Oh well!

I sold my Disco privately via disco3.co.uk, might be worth putting an advert up

I know it's miles away but give Marc Turner at Volvo Cars London a try (02073838000). People aren't exactly falling over themselves to buy cars at the moment so a second conversation with another dealership out of your area is worthwhile.

The XC60 is a great all rounder. I sorted out a new D5 205 for my Dad 3 years ago and even though he would usually change cars by now he can't think of a vehicle that's more suited to his needs.
Just run in at 39,000 miles it now easily gets 38-39 mpg on a run.
