I have just bought an 06 S60 SE with 68k I collected it from the North east last Friday and drove it the 150 miles home to Scotland. From the minute I got behind the wheel I absolutely love it it has had one owner full service history and just about every optional extra .Four days into my ownership I was driving towards my village on a straight well maintained A road when all of a sudden there was a big bang and the sound as if something was dragging from the bottom of the car.I stopped straight away and looked under the vehicle with a torch as it was dark but I could see nothing I checked for a puncture but there was none. I got back in the car and decided that as this country road was unlit I would drive the car the 1/2 mile home which I did the noise was terrible.I had the car recovered to a garage the following day for them to find after speaking to Volvo and telling them the damage that had been done break shoes smashed break cable broken brake back plate smashed to bits and a piece of steel 1/2 an inch thick by 2inches in width alien to the braking system.volvo said that this is a bearing housing failure which is not uncommon in this model. The question I would like to ask forum users is whether they have heard of this failure? I have found nothing on any Volvo or forum site.this has cost£1600 to put right. Thing is I still love the car.

I've had several customers bring their cars in with worries of the brake shoe failure and paying through the nose to have them replaced despite me telling then they dont need it. I simply can't see how it could be caused by them - I've serviced Volvos the last 10 years and our company have combined Volvo experience of nearly 40 years and we can't see how it can be brake shoes failing - having not had a customers car do what yours has I can't investigate further but we've never had an 850, v/s70, or s60 have this problem - even if the shoes disintegrated they are designed as such not to cause that sort of damage - additionally I can't see how the shoes could possibly damage the back plate - id love to see some pics if poss - keen to learn more about this
