P2 V70 autobox failures......dates??
Discussion
Chaps, just after a bit of advice. I'm looking at upgrading my V70 to an auto T5, anything from 2000-2004, but I'm worried by the autobox failures that these cars can apparently suffer from. Are there specific build dates or VIN numbers that identify the 'dodgy' boxes? Also, am I correct in thinking that there are no real fixes or solutions to these problems, ie, once it screws up it's had it, due to the cost of a replacement 'box vs the value of the car? OR..........am I worrying too much about what isn't actually a common problem?!!
Any advice appreciated thanks........

Wel I had a 2002 V70 D5 auto and it was banging when coming to a halt at the change point from 2-1 gear.
Flushed thr fluid and changed the g'box mounts - no difference.
Throught the Volvo forums I learned it was very likely the solenoids not functioning correctly within the valve body. They can be DIY changed but it was just beyond my ability/inclination. Took it to a gearbox place and they said the options were
a). Swap out the solenoids - £300
b). New/recon valve body - £800
c). New/recon 'box £2000+
The only option that would definately fix the car was C).
I wasn't prepared to spunk several hundred quid on the car with no definite long term fix and the cost of a new 'box was more than the car so got rid of it.

I have a similar issue now, did yours sometimes lack motivation when setting off even when flooring it?Flushed thr fluid and changed the g'box mounts - no difference.

Did the emissions warning light come at all?
I've been running mine like that for a good few months now.
No it seemed fine on acceleration. It was purely when slowing to a halt and the box would go 5-4-3-2-bang-1.
Only did it when fully up to temp i.e. after 20mins or so. Very frustrating.
I drove it like that for maybe 5k miles until I felt it was starting to get worse, then got rid.
It's a bit st really as gearbox places will basically told you what I just posted above i.e. it's going to be a new 'box to get it right again.
It's worth trying a fluid flush though. Quite easy to do on the earlier D5 engines. Have a google for the "Gibbons Method" - that should throw up the guide. Essentially you drain the box from the sump then attach a hose to the top cooler outlet, run engine and pump out x amount of fluid - put that amount back in and repeat until you get a full flush throug(10-14l).

I had a few problems with my V70 and this was enough for me to just get rid. Great cars but can be a pain in the arse.
