2007 V70 - auto gearbox fluid change
Discussion
Much better. The earlier 5 speed are made of Chocolate and the 2000-2001 ones are the worst. They suddenly fail although the banging in and out of gears (like my V70 of that vintage) are not good signs.....
I understand that the P3s are much better, although it can't hurt to do a change. Other manufactureres do the same. I think you main issue is going to be doing it, as I believe the dipstick was removed to it might be a bit of a sod to re-fil.

After a nasty gearbox failure in my previous BMW 5 series at 110k I think it would be prudent to change the auto gearbox oil and filter in my V70 (new shape 2.4D).
Is it the sealed for life variety and what would the rough costs be??
Any feedback would be appreciated.
Cheers.
There was a thread running earlier about this.at 160,000 miles my box is beginning to make the odd noise, discussed it with my Volvo garage but they are inclined to not change the oil,its not due by the way,let sleeping dogs lie etcIs it the sealed for life variety and what would the rough costs be??

By 160k its too late for any preventative maintenance, that's why I'm thinking of changing the fluid at 72k before any clonks start! BMW units are sealed for life - life for BMW equates to 200,000 kilometers - failure is then "acceptable". I want to keep my Volvo running past 200,000 miles.
Mercs have a routine transmission fluid change (around 60k I think) - I don't understand why other manufacturers don't do the same?

I picked up a 2005 v70 d5 auto as a cheap runaround back in December - 190000km or thereabouts on the clock. Gearbox was not smooth especially with a trailer attached. Mine is the 5 speed Asean box. I doubt it ever saw an ATF change and it was sporting a towbar - suspect a horsebox. I got a full transfusion done which transformed it. It's no BMW 7 speed or anything close in terms of refinement but a perfectly good mile muncher. heading for 230000km now and I'd be surprised if it doesn't pass the 300 mark in the next year or so with no major issues.
