Hi all

I'm seriously considering one of these as our next car, but on a budget of 5k can I expect to get a decent high-mileage example ? As a compact estate I love the look of them, inside doesn't look too shabby either.

I had one for a couple of years. Bought it at 106k miles and ran it to 132k. Mine was a 56 plate 2.0D.

Not the most reliable motoring experience TBH. I found parts to be expensive.

Failed to start on my drive on Christmas morning with a spurious immobiliser fault. A known issue that was sorted at the main dealer with software update.

Random problems with the electronic key not being recognised. It was usually fine after trying a couple of times, but apparently it's a known problem, and can cost a fair bit to sort out.

An injector died on me causing the car to die in heavy traffic. I took it to a local specialist who couldn't diagnose the problem, so it went to the main dealer again. Cost the best part of £800 to sort that one out.

The handbrake mechanism broke on the rear caliper, causing it to stick on. I guess you could put that one down to wear and tear, and it only cost me £50 for a new caliper from eBay, which I fitted myself.

The flywheel was starting to knock when I traded it in. Not surprising I suppose at that mileage, but the dealer wanted £1600 for a new clutch and flywheel. I've also heard about problems with the release bearings, which are integral to the slave cylinder, so again not that cheap. I could have got it done for half that at somewhere like Mr Clutch, but decided to cut my losses and buy something with lower mileage.

It was a shame because I absolutely loved the car. It was comfortable, relatively economical (46mpg combined usually), and compared to German cars of the same age, mileage and price was well specced. Mine had heated leather, factory sat nav, excellent xenon headlights plus other stuff as standard that might well be options on say a BMW.

Mine might just have been an unlucky experience, and I know others that haven't had any of the problems I had at similar sort of mileages, but it got a bit too much for me having to worry about another fault every 6 weeks or so.

We have a V50 diesel and it is the worst car that I have ever owned! The quality is terrible and the parts are expensive. It's currently sitting at a garage with failed electrics, knackered alternator which killed the battery and has done over the power steering. It has an oil leak. We had to replace the headlights due to somebody breaking off the adjusters and we had to buy new wheel nuts as the others were damaged when new tyres were put on it (the wheel nuts are hollow alloy!) oh and it leaks! Stay away from these cars like your life depends on it.
Even my local garage said that he was thinking of turning Volvo owners away because the cars are such a misery to work on! I would never ever buy another Volvo.

Cheers

biggrin used to keep me busy a few years when they were new.

Not the most reliable to say the least.

I ran a V50 SE Lux 2.0D for 50,000 miles 08-11. 100% reliable and went like a rocket. Not particularly economical and sore on tyres but loved it to bits. Still put it up there with past owned BMW 3 series and Merc C class estates I have had. Maybe later ones were better built?

I had two, 55 plate manual and 58 plate Powershift auto. Ran both to 75k or thereabouts.

First one nothing went wrong apart from a seal on the headlight washers, done under warranty.
Second one nothing went wrong.

Both driven reasonably spiritedly, incl V-max (or close enough for purposes of discussion) on German autobahns from time to time.

Compared to a Mondeo with ostensibly the same engine they were not even in the same solar system regards reliability or refinement. The Mondeo glad to get rid, bag of spanners, and the dealers were even worse.

Problem is first three / four years of a vehicle's life may or may not be representative of it from years 6 and onwards which is where OP may be looking.

One of the most reliable cars I've owned.

My car is still off the road. Has been now for over two weeks! Volvo dealers have been helpful in trying to sort the problem but had to go further with their diagnostics which involved removing the front bumper! They have now come back to me saying that the car now needs a new steering pump and front wiring harness which is over £900. So basically when the altenator failed it also caused all this other damage. I would understand if we didn't look after the car but we do and always get it serviced at the correct intervals.
I feel really let down by the car and do not trust it one bit.
I am also at a complete loss as to why Volvo charge so much for there parts and have lost complete faith in them as a company and certainly their products. Never again will a Volvo darken my driveway!
