XC 90 T6 - the infamous transmission warning!

A friend has an 04 plate t6 with 50k on the clock and got the warning today but car is running fine. he's going to call the dealer to get it checked out but from what ive read its not gonna be cheap

any ideas on likely culprits and cost estimates to fix ie is it more economical to bite the bullet and get a recon unit fitted or do they repair the fault and send you on your merry way for it to happen again?

or does it generally depend on the specific cause of the failure?

last time I priced up a box at work inc fitting was around 5k. T6 boxes are not the best to be honest.
