Hi,

I am new to the Volvo segment on pistonheads and was wondering if you guys could give me a pointer on a car that I have inherited from a cousin.

First of all, it is a Dark Blue 52 (2003) plate Volvo S40 Petrol 2.0S.
The specs seem quite low. Standard cloth interior, split folding rear seats.
Comes with a HU-605 Stereo, (4x25w speakers) and apparently a ten disc CD changer?

the mileage is 101410, with the engine being replaced in 2007. at 71000, the 'new' engine had covered 12000 miles. The cambelt was also replaced then too. It has 15" alloy wheels, with well, interesting tyres. 1 (2003) Michelin 195 60 15 88v [correct tyre size]. 1 Bridgestone B390 (no date stamp) 185 60 15 88H. and 2 (Not on the axle, for some reason) Pirelli Mud and Snow tyres (2001 [Older than the car itself]). One of them is even facing the wrong way round. As they are directional.

The HU-605 stereo, does work, but I replaced the battery, and now won't take the code on the credit card like plastic thing in the book. I tried another code detailed in the notes section of the owners manual.

My main worry is the fact that I think my cousin has no actually serviced it since 2007, as there are spaces in the book, but no stamps. And he has just topped up the oil.

It had a clutch and flywheel replacement in April 2011 according to the Euro Car Parts receipts.

The electric windows and mirrors work fine.

The Bonnet release catch, however does not, and therefore opens itself while driving, potentially could be dangerous, if the hydraulic strut was to break.

My cousin had the car on Gumtree, with an asking price of £900, but the advert said *nearly new tyres*. An obvious lie.

About 80 miles into driving it, it seems to have developed, or he knew about it and didn't tell me, but anyway. Apparently according to my father it has something to do with the Choke? but I have had a look and it could be the Idle Air Control Valve. The car when started, runs, then revs itself up to about 4000rpm, when trying to drive anywhere, it just splutters and stalls. Or has a sound like backfiring and jerks around. I needed to use it and it suddenly accelerated towards some children, obviously, this is very dangerous!

I am just wondering what kind of price you Volvoers(?) would value this at?

Any responses would be much appreciated.

Thanks

With a full MOT and running Ok about £500-800

Without a full MOt and running a bit rough - weigh it in.
