I keep coming back to these. I own a P2 V70 T5 manual which has been a tremendous all rounder, family car and house building rammel ferry.

Thing is, what do I replace it with?

I have the following as a wish list:

1.Big estate
2. Petrol engine (preferably turbocharged to aid economy)
3. Manual gearbox
4. Comfort
5. Would like four wheel drive
6. Would like 7 seats

Now I know life is a compromise, but I have looked at and quite like Audi A6 Avants, but the seat comfort and ride puts me off. Merc E classes are nice on paper, but they are all slushers and the ones I can afford were build in the era of woeful quality. Saab 9-5? Ok, but an old design and no better than my T5.

Can you see where this is going? If I could get over the angle gear reliability issue and get hold of a nice manual R I'd be sorely tempted.

Similar dilema. Key issue for me is that the "R" essentially stopped in 2007 and is now a 5-9 year old car.

The V70 T6 is "nice on paper" car but in reality not so good (especially if you have owned fettled T5's).

I am sure there are a few of us who have the 850/V70 T5 bug and are still trying to find a suitable alternative.

Cars that are on my estates list comprise RS6, E63 or a DMS'd 535D. However, part of me knows that I will end up buying a V70 P3 D5 with 215bhp.

Appreciate the angle gear is probably the biggest "watch out" along with the engine block itself - why not simply have any potential vehicle inspected at the whichever is the nearest dealer to the seller for peace of mind.

On as sidenote, Clive Brook in Bradford have/had an overpriced P2 V70R in recently.

I am also toying with a P3 2.5T that could be tickled with a bigger turbo/injectors to make 300BHP?

The angle gear is a one-time problem on the early cars. Once fixed, it won't break again so you could look for a car that has had it replaced. The angle gear went on my car (S60R) and was replaced with one that's not made of chocolate. Not hugely expensive in Volvo terms at around £1,200 fitted. R engines appear only to be weak if running higher boost - cylinder liner splits and can't be repaired. Some guys replace the 2.5 with a 2.4 or 2.3 which are reputedly stronger. I chose to have stronger liners made and fitted to the 2.5.
