Quick query for owners....

We need a stopgap car for a year or so for the OH and we'd like a V70.

It's down to a choice of two - 2004 2.4 petrol auto or 2004 2.4 diesel auto.
I can't be more specific than that. (Has to be auto).

In real life (ie. not what the manufacturer says) what can we expect of these in mixed, real life use? I'm thinking maybe 28 from the petrol and 40 for the diesel.

I personally prefer the petrol - it's be a lot quicker, it's a nicer looking car (the one I'm looking at) and IMO the petrol will be cheaper to service. Personally I'm not bothered about the mpg, however the OH insists that I find these things out rolleyes

I had a 2.4 manual v50 and only got about 26 mpg though this was nearly all urban mileage. It was a lovely engine though, silky smooth, quiet but with a nice noise when you put your foot down. I would imagine it suits an auto box well.

I recently purchased a 2005 V70 T5.

I am getting an average of 27mpg, but a lot of this has been motorway miles.

Very quick and very comfortable.

I've got a 2002 V70 D5 auto (it'll be the same 163bhp engine) and the trip computer is saying 46mpg.

It lies.

We've done a few really long trips recently and I calculated the last tank to be 43mpg.

The D5 engine is fantastically frugal when it's at cruising speed but any stop/start just slaughters the economy. For reference I usually get about 430odd miles from a tank of diesel. This can go up to 550ish if it's mainly longer trips. We use ours a lot around town. The manuals seem much better.

I would imagine the petrol would be similarly not too bad on the motorway and $hit around town.

If it's only a short term car I wouldn't fuss about petrol or diesel though. Just get whichever is in the best condition.

For reference I had a BMW E39 528 touring auto in the past and managed 23mpg out if that.

I have a 2.4 petrol (manual though). With mixed driving I get about 28-29mpg. On a run on the motorway I'll see mid to high 30's. Stop-start town driving 26mpg.
