Volvo bringing back the 5-pots?
Discussion
Seems so, looking at the (new) V40 section on the Volvo website. I thought the 5-cyl (in petrol form at least) went due to its thirst, with the diesel not too much longer for this world either (my own hunch, stemming from the downsizing of everything and the age of the engine). However, as you can see below:
V40 D3
Five-cylinder 2.0 litre high performance turbo diesel engine
High-precision Piezo injector technology
350 Nm torque
Excellent fuel economy
Start/Stop technology
Maintenance-free particle filter
Engine brake energy charging
Six-speed manual gearbox or six-speed Geartronic automatic
V40 D4
Five-cylinder 2.0 litre high performance turbo diesel engine
High precision Piezo injector technology
400 Nm torque
Excellent fuel economy
Start/Stop technology
Maintenance free particle filter
Engine brake energy charging
Six-speed manual gearbox or six-speed Geartronic automatic
V40 T5
Five-cylinder 2.5 litre high performance turbo petrol engine
Electronically controlled port injection
360 Nm torque (400 Nm with overboost)
Excellent fuel efficiency
Start/Stop technology
Engine brake energy charging
Six-speed Geartronic automatic
Huzzah for quirky engine noises!

The original Volvo 5banger was and still is one of the best mass produced engines I've ever seen - it's only real down side was thirst and in the later years emissions. That said, the later versions with ETM were not bad on fuel -my c70 will nudge 35mpg on a long run.
The 4pot version found in the s40 is also a hugely underrated engine.
Glad they are pursuing 5pots again - gave Volvo a really unique character
