2004 S80 - wheel/tyre query

Folks,
My father has just just acquired a 2004 S80 D5 with approx 80K miles,
and is very happy, apart from the rather firm ride he is getting.
Its a nice, well-serviced 2 owner car, but has 18inch wheels.
He has moved to this from 1997 S70 which was 'very comfy'.
Would anyone happen to know if these car came with any kind of 'sports suspension' option which might mean a change of shocks/springs is needed,
or whether a swap to 16 inchers might do the trick ?
Also is it likely 16 inch Volvo OEM wheels would fit as a direct swap ?
(thinking any further tinkering).
Lastly, any pointers on where to source would be be great.
