Ouch - Volvo XC90 bill - that hurt!
Discussion
Our 2003 XC90 went off to our local Volvo indi on Monday for its annual check up etc, I dont drive it much as my wife uses it most of the time and never really says much, I tend to find out whats gone or going wrong when the garage calls and a nice voice says - "This year Rog its X" but this year I'm glad I was sitting down when I took the call.
New Disks and pads at the front
Four Wheel drive coupling buggered
Engine Mounts top and bottom buggered
Reversing Sensors buggered
Something on the front suspension buggered
Various other little things sorted
MOT
Service
The garage we use is really good and I know they only do what is needed.
I got the car back today and it really drives very well.
I dread to imagine how much the bill would have been at a main dealer.
We do intend on keeping this one for years so thanks Peter for bringing it back up to scratch.

Somewhat meaningless RW, if you don't mind me saying so. That bill needs to be put in context to the overall service & maintenance costs in your ownership, taking into account type of use, mileage etc. So, hopefully in the big scheme of things the bill may not be too bad.Edited by Johnboy Mac on Wednesday 15th February 20:41

Johnboy Mac - Good point and to be honest we have had the XC 6 years and maintenance so far has only been servicing baring back wheel barings last year so not all bad, its only done 64000 miles, (9000 in last year) the bill was just over 900 labour with the rest being parts, its just me I'm tight!Roger Woods said:

£900 labour being an indi I would guess the labour rate is about £50 per hour so that equates to 18 hours labour !the biggest labour time is 2.5 hours to remove the angle gear and fit a new splined sleeve and the other jobs simple and quick, also cant see how all 4 reverse sensors fail at once ! the wiring loom in the bumper used to get water in and cause codes for all 4 sensors.
frightening labour charge to me !

Judging by the work list I have, 18 hours sounds about right!the biggest labour time is 2.5 hours to remove the angle gear and fit a new splined sleeve and the other jobs simple and quick, also cant see how all 4 reverse sensors fail at once ! the wiring loom in the bumper used to get water in and cause codes for all 4 sensors.

64K miles & the engine mounts, drive couplings and suspension are knackered? They don't make 'em like they used to! (that's almost VW/Audi bad!)

Great ta, you? Shame to see the scooby go
I'd say the S60 would be a great choice to be honest. Speak to y2blade about the, he seems to know them inside out

Had the engine mounts done on mine (also 2003 D5) at 96,000m and apparently it is common. I also had front suspension bushes replaced at the same time. Considering the weight of a XC90, the wear and tear on suspension and brakes can be high depending on how it's driven. They don't make 'em like they used to! (that's almost VW/Audi bad!)
And what is it about the parking sensors?? ours seem to be always be going wrong and I have lost count of the number of times I have had error messages, new sensors, and bits of associated wiring loom replaced.

I have put most of this years issues down to the fact the car sat around for quite a bit not being used, in the big scheme of things a couple of grand to bring it up to stratch is not bad, I do see the XC being VERY long term. I used it today for work and I have to say it does drive very well now. When I was talking to Peter the mechanic yesterday he said thatthe rear engine mount had dropped almost 2 inches, it was very smooth today. And what is it about the parking sensors?? ours seem to be always be going wrong and I have lost count of the number of times I have had error messages, new sensors, and bits of associated wiring loom replaced.
