I'm in the market for a £1k big automatic and there seem to be a fair few Volvos out there for that kind of money. I'm lazy these days so I'd like an auto, MPG is of no concern.

Looking for something that has:

A nice long MOT
Automatic
Patrol
Estate
£1000 max.
Is no slouch

I really like the look of the V70 of around 1997

If fuel is'nt an issue go for a late model 960 or (V90 last of the line up & quite rare) These have the straight six engines which are simply lovely, rwd too. Proper comfy ride & generally simple mechanics, its got a Toyota gearbox (Aisin) that won't break.

The V70 especially the auto's have issues at this age, lots of French made parts, the ride is'nt very good (skittish) but the rest of it nice.

I've owned several, if I was'nt doing miles I'd have a V90 if I could find a nice one.

850 - without a doubt the best Volvo ever made. T5's are fast but the 2.0 and 2.5 20valve models are more robust, make a lovely noise and a real minter can be had for a grand. The 2.5 10v makes a great tow car and goes really well too

If you are not concerned about mpg then you should get a bargain T5

My 52 plate V70 went for £850 last year , just no market for them, everybody will tell you they are worth more , but when you ask for their money they all disapear.

This has got to be the 960 or the rarer V90 - last of the Volvos built with no regard to cost would be great to find one with less then 100k on the clock and indeed if someone knows of a low mileage one then let me know! to this day I haven't found anything with a boot so big!

Total rubbish about the 960 being the last of the Volvos built with no regard to cost - the 850 is a far superior machine in every way - performance, handling, reliability, safety, interior design. The 5 cylinder version of the modular engine is also far far stronger than the 6cylinder

The last of the Proper Volvo's had Aisin (Toyota) Transmissions, Nippon Denson electronics. The 850/V70 onwards had various bits of rubbish French made parts, eg gearbox, steering rack, shocks etc & some electronics too. So not the same at all.

I still say a V90 was the best Volvo ever built, somewhat dated maybe but a quality machine made of quality parts.

The 850 is also a quality machine - I should know I work on both and I can catagorically tell you the 850 is the superior machine in almost everyway. I'm not too sure where you your info from but the m56 gearbox in an 850 shares a large majority of its components with the m90 in the 900 series both were developed by getrag or germany 850's don't have French electronics either - neither the 10 or 20v cars have any denso parts - you're thinking of the s80 and later v70's. The 10v 850 models run Siemens injection and electronics (German) and the 20v models Bosch (German). It was developed by Volvo using Volvo money at the same time as the 900series - the difference being the 900 was effectively a re-hash of the then already dated 700series and 850 was a completely new and thoroughly modern platform
