Gents

I need my memory refreshed here. Sat contemplating changing my current V70 TDI (Classic) for something similar, but newer so thinking of spending around £3000 to £4000 on another V70 diesel but in facelift guise. Ideally I'd like the much newer version, ie from about 2002 onwards with the fully colour coded bumper etc but I'm struggling a bit with engine specs here:

And also...

It's the second style I'd ideally like, no real reason... just prefer them. That said, I'd rather avoid the Euro 4 185bhp engine (black engine cover?) which I think I'm right in saying had the duel mass flywheel and a few other potentially scary issues. I'd rather have the older 163bhp (silver engine cover?) Euro 3 engine as these seem a little more robust.

The question is, I assume you can actually buy the facelifted (second) car with the older engine and if so, how are they badged as most seem to just say "D5" or 2.5 turbodiesel in the descriptions and I'm struggling to actually indentify a car that ticks the boxes for me. So in short, a facelifted car with a manual box but with the older generation engine... do they exist and if so, on what years? I'm assuming if they do it'll only be the very early cars, sort of circa 2002?

Appreciated the guidance in advance!

Couple of things to be aware of:

  1. Many dealers do not actually know what they are selling
  2. The car you seek exists NOTE they started 54 onwards only so NOT 2002

3 easy pointers

Perfect, thanks for that. What threw me was a pre-facelift V70 with facelift wheels (on an 02 plate) and I automatically assumed it was a facelift car. On looking at the rest of the images, I realised it wasn't. So, 2004 onwards car with the 163bhp engine is what I'm after... however it's my understanding that these may actually be badged both as the D5 and the 2.4 turbodiesel?

Cheers

The car you seek only ever came in 163bhp (Black engine cover).

Anybody trying to sell you anything else, is mistaken.

You are thinking of the EuIV which has a Silver/Grey engine cover and came in both the 2.4D (163bhp) and D5 (185bhp) but only ever in the facelifted car.

Off topic - people have been known to replace the 2.4D badge with the D5 - without a good knowledge of how to read the VIN on these cars, the majority of people cannot tell the difference.

Bloody Volvos!

So, to recap here.

Euro 3 = black cover, 163bhp, solid flywheel and available in pre and facelifted cars

Euro 4 - silver cover and either 163bhp or 185bhp, duel mass flywheel and from 2004 onwards

Definately struggling here as identifying the right car is nigh on impossible and with most being a fair distance away, I'd ratehr be 100% sure of what it is I'm going to see before embarking on a journey. However as you say, nigh on impossible to tell without an image of the engine cover or the VIN.

I don't think you'll get exactly what you are looking for for with a 4k max budget.

Open to offers on mine btw, I kind of need to sell it now the other halfs maternity pay has kicked in (which is a pittance!).

I did note yours whilst trawling the classifieds Dave and yes, certainly ticks the boxes however only one slight issue... it's an auto and having been there and done that, I would prefer a manual. Don't get me wrong, the last auto was fine and in some ways better but personal preference dictates a manual.

best of luck with the sale though, should go quick. Looks a good un.

The euro 3 has a DMF as well, my Dad has just had it changed on his.

From early 03 onwards there was a mild face lift (new wing mirrors to the less rounded type, and SE had more kit including electric drivers seat, auto-dimming rear view mirror etc.) The new headlights and 5 spoke wheels came in mid 04 (probably for 05MY cars).
