As the title says, I'm running a facelift 2007 2.4D auto. I'm disappointed with the fuel consumption (34-35mpg) and feel the engine lacks low down torque.

I'm looking at tuning the engine and have seen options from 205 - 250 bhp for the 2.4D (currently on standard 163 bhp)

Any thoughts/recommendations?

Also, does the 2.4D have exactly the same running gear as the D5, can it take the extra power/torque without any issues. Economy and reliability are my main concerns so the 250 bhp option is not likely

Believe them to be identical mechanically.

The software is different and hence why when tuned/chipped the 163 and 185 map across to the same-ish 205bhp. Thereafter you need to start to look at uprated items (eg intercooler) as the torque and power curves start to swell and probably wear components.

Surprised that you are not seeing 40s MPG. Had the 185 (6speed manual) and low/mid 40's was realistic.

Lots of worthwhile stuff here:

I would say your mpg is normal for one of these. I have a 58 plate V70 D5 R-design geartronic,i've never had it over 38mpg even on a 600 mile journey through France ! Most i've had out of a tank is about 600 miles, normally does around 450 miles to a tank but we do quite a few short journeys. Saying that its far more economical than our old 2003 V70 R manual we had previously.
