V50 Gearbox (Auto) delay

Hi all. Mrs A has a 2008 V50 automatic and there is a horrific delay when selecting 1st or reverse. I'm talking about a 2 second delay when going from neutral to first or reverse before it actually engages the gear!

It's done 90k so I'm hoping the gearbox isn't on the way out, but hoping it could be software related?

Has anyone seen this before? Any ideas to the problem?

I'm not sure I can offer much advice, I've had a couple of diesel auto's and I'm afraid that definitely doesn't sound good....I'd get it to either an auto specialist or volvo soonish.
