Budget £15k to £18k.
Quite like the idea of 4WD however, I'm not sure that it justifies the extra?
I would be interested to hear what others think and if there are any issues that I should be aware of!

I've run a V70 D5 AWD from new (Jan 06) (Looks like a std V70). I bought it specifically because I tow a large caravan and have been stuck on muddy fields several times with previous cars (Mondeo Omega etc) It has performed superbly and never got stuck. It has also been the most reliable car I have ever owned with only a throttle unit required in 91K miles. It averages about 40 mpg when not towing. It is extremely comfy though the ride can be choppy at the back with no load in it. It is no sports car thougth, the AWD only there to get you out of trouble on snow, mud etc. I would have another althougth not so keen on the new model, perhaps an XC90 next.

We recently bought a current shape XC70 D5 AWD to replace a Disco 3 and have to say it's a very nice bit of kit.

It's a 215bhp auto, 37mpg in general use and this could be easily over 40 with a bit of restraint on a run...much better than the Disco's 25! Currently waiting for another snowy winter as to make up for the lack of the Disco's clever electronics we've bought a set of winter boots for it.

We looked at the V70 AWD but decided it didn't have the ground clearance we wanted, think you'll find a V70 AWD a bit harder to find as well....we only came across a couple in a month or two of looking for the XC.

Great thanks for the replies.
I think the XC70 will do the job. Will start hunting around, although there do seem to be quite a few about. I realise that negative feedback isnt allowed, however, has anyone used PWCARS in Slough to buy from? The website looks great and they seem to have a good range of cars to choose from
Cheers

It might be worth looking at the Audi A6 Allroad as well before you make up your mind to buy an XC70. We went for the Volvo over the Audi because of the more vertical tailgate glass giving better boot space for our dogs, but I would say the Audi was probably the better car to drive.

Don't have any first hand experience of PW Cars but they always seem to have a good selection of Volvo's to choose from.

After some searching, I've just bought an 09 V70 D5.

I 'experienced' a few local Volvo main dealers and PW.

I reckon that I paid less for MY car from a Volvo main dealership
than a similar offering from PW.

My strong advice (if they have the model/spec you want) would be to buy it from MRG Volvo in Chippenham, they are nice, helpful, honest people and well worth the journey (and no, I didn't buy my car from there rolleyes).
