Hi all,

Been debating for a while wether to purchase an S40 or A4. In the end the Volvo won. However after looking and searching for reviews I have found alot contradict each other. My main concern is Reliability!

Is there anything specific I need to look out for? Common faults? Certain batch numbers with issues? Been stung a few times and trying to avoid it again!

Appreciate any replies!!!

at 72,000 the service bill is four figures, and DO NOT skip it like I did

You need to change the DPF and have the fluid topped up

Other failures on my s40 that is sat on the drive are:
rear heated screen, cd player not loading/reading cd's, volume/temperature knobs that randomly decide they are being turned

I also had to replace:
Turbo
DPF (See Above)
Injectors
Front Bearings
Rear Calipers

mine has 140,000 odd on it but most of these jobs I've had to do twice!

If you do buy it and you need any bits I am stripping mine for spares, oh and it has a genuine Volvo Towbar on it too thumbup

I've been running mine for a year. I really like it. The only bother I've had is a need to replace the alternator and tyres.

40-45mpg, mainly short town journeys. Try and get SE + winter spec, plenty of toys then.

One thing though, it was truly crap in the snow we had in the North of Scotland. I mean terrible, I got stuck everywhere. No winter tyres on it but getting stuck on the straight and level takes the piss. Never had that problem with the old T5.

Teffers,

I've had an '08 V50 2.0d R-Design for almost a year and I'm delighted with it.

I traded from a Mk5 Golf GT TDI, and the Volvo is quieter, faster, more comfortable, and grippier. The Golf had to go as I heard and read too many horror stories about dodgy injectors, AC pumps, oil pumps, etc. The cylinder head had to replaced under warranty as it had become porous...

There doesn't seem to be as many issues reported on the PSA/Ford diesel fitted to the Volvo as the VAG 2.0 TDI PD engines.

I've had to get the A/C recharged this summer, which going by the forums will be a be regular occurrence.

There is a slight rumble from one of the front wheel bearings, which again is a weakness on this car, as are alternator's, although mine is OK just now. Touch wood.

Although it hasn't been completely fault free I would recommend one.
