Hi guys. Picked up my new (to me) 1996 v70 T5 today and have a problem.
My speedo is not working.

Is this a common problem and can anyone point me in the direction of where to start to fix it please?

Is the ABS light on/does the ABS work?

Speedp takes a speed signal from the n/s/f hub using the ABS sensor... but generally speaking when there's something wrong in that department, the ABS telltale illuminates and the ABS stops working.

96, pretty sure they didn't come out till '97.

Cheap sat nav is probably the easiest option, as a former owner of one probably best the speedo doesn't work smile

No, no abs lights. Although it has had recent nee discs and pads on the front if that has anything to do with it?

Does the seat belt warning light/buzzer work?

Back in the day, a guy I worked for used to disconnect the seat belt buzzer of his Dad's Volvo, and iirc, that took out the Speedo...

Yea the seat belt light and 'clicker' works. (only makes a clicking sound is that correct?) but the trip does not update or work.

Also when I turn the ignition on the abs light does not come on.

Sounds like it could be an ABS issue.

The ABS lamp should illuminate on turning the key. Check to see if the ABS warning lamp has a bulb fitted, you can reach it from under the dash by removing the trim panel between the steering column/pedals.

Just this week I removed the Abs ecu from my V70 to send it off for repair and I can confirm that the speedo didn't work with the ecu removed.

Does the brake warning lamp work, ie the red "!"

On mine (1999 V70) the speedo was erratic then the ABS light came on, a short time later the speedo stopped working. I removed and replaced the n/s/f sensor and this cured the ABS light for about 5mins. The speedo started working again however is erratic plus the ABS kicks in at low speed - I swapped the ABS ECU and still the same. I traced the issue to rusty/swollen/knackered ABS rings (ie, it's not getting a clean signal) so short term, I removed the main ABS fuse under the bonnet. This puts the ABS and brake warning telltales on and knocks out the ECU, however the speedo does still function.

As has been said, if your ABS telltale does not illuminate on start up then go out, it would suggest the bulb is blown or perhaps has been removed to mask an underlying ABS fault. You could try and stand on the brakes, see if it locks up (ie, ABS no worky!) If this is the cae or indeed you fit a bulb and the light stays on, there's an issue and as the speedo is inop, I'd start looking at the n/s/f sensor and wiring. The sensor comes out the hub by way of a 10mm bolt (look down behind the disc, botton of the strut) Remove it and check the end, if it's badly scored then it could be the issue... however the scoring is usually due to contact with the metal pick up ring on the CV joint, which is usually down to the ring swelling (ouch!) which thus means, it may need a new ring.

Position of sensor...

Scored/knackered sensors...

Sensor plugs into the loom down in here...

Granted, none of this may be relevant to your issue however it might help.

Cheers

Thank you for your help. Who did you send it off to and how much does it cost?

My god, thank you for taking the time to post all of that! Abs sensors will be my first port of call after establishing I have a bulb in my dash. Thank you for your help.

I sent it to this guy on Ebay;

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/volvo-abs-850-v70-c70-s8...

Cost was £50 plus it cost me £7 to send by special delivery. Very quick turnaround.

ABS sensor on every wheel hub, so the Anti-lock brakes can check that no wheel has locked, however the speedo only uses one of these sensors (it assumes the rest of the wheels are doing roughly the same speed!)

Update chaps.

Spent about an hour removing the sensors, checking and cleaning them, all were fine. Was just about to remove the abs ecu and I thought I really should check the fuse...

You know what Im going to say next boxedin

Suffice to say the speedo is now working.

I just wonder why the fuse popped in the first place?

Always start at the start, there's good reason for that!

As I said previously, it may have been removed to hide an underlying issue or perhaps just blew randomly. Have you had the chance to give it a run yet and se if all is well? If so, then superb... a nice easy fix for once!

Though I fear I may have just jinxed that for you!

Cheers!
