Just called my friendly local Volvo dealer to price up a spare key for a 2008 V50.They have quoted me £34.60 for the metal slide out part,£74.50 for the remote part of the key,£10.00 for 'software',and £95.00 to code it to the car. With the VAT this makes the total price a whopping £256.92 for a new key.

Is this the going rate or can they be sourced cheaper?

I had similar with a Mazda. I got a blank off Ebay, then went to my local key cutter who cut and programmed it for £10.

Sounds about right from a main dealer, I got a used 2008 S40 SE LUX 2.0D with Keyless Drive from an independent, which only had one key, the independent covered the cost of getting a second key complete with the emergency metal key and programming by the Volvo maindealer.

Since then saw an ad for a local independent Volvo specialist in Devon that offers key programming etc.

Very complicated things those little keys, but not to the extent Dealers charge, but where else are you going to get one coded, the s40/v50 knows how many keys are coded too so some car work will have to be done, the plunger has a transponder fitted which is separate to the remote control part too!!
