Hi folks,

Have recently bought a 2005 (mk2) T5 smile however the engine cooling fan is permanently running. I can't see anything obviously wrong apart from the A/C is not working and probably wants re-gassing. The temp gauge works normally, so I am assuming a sensor has gone. Any ideas before I take it to the dealer and have my trousers taken down?

Thermostat? Same thing happened with my Audi..temp normal, fan staying on,thermostat knackered.Check your rad fluid - it may be boiling away if the 'stat's gone.

there was a cooling fan recall on many models, worth checking if its been done.

need to get the codes checked at the stealer dealer as this could show an engine management fault then the fan is put on full speed to protect the engine.

one way to check if the thermostat is opening is to feel the lower radiator hose it should be a lot cooler than the top hose.

Thanks for your ideas guys.

Had a reply on a different forum which kinda makes sense. There are two temp sensors involved with managing the cooling fan. The first is coolant temp, the second is related to the A/C. As this is U/S and needs re-gassing, apparently it is a known side effect. I will go and have it gassed in the week and see if this is the fix. I will report back to the group for future reference.

Incidentally, loving the car! It's an ex- Hampshire Constabulary Police spec vehicle. Have the full service print out information and discovered it had a brand new engine just 48k ago! Volvo offer the Police a 300k mileage warranty on these vehicles. It has the stiffer suspension and big brake pack. I had a 'standard' T5 previously and this car is noticeably quicker wink

As my car is white, I have a new problem with cars in front suddenly slowing to the speed limit........

if the A/C is low on gas it will not pressurise the system so the compressor will not energise and in turn should not put the cooling fan on as there is no signal from the sensor to activate the fan.

if getting re gassed get them to put dye in so any leaks are visible at a later date.

the police cars I worked on were standard engine tune but some cars were recalled for the suspension upgrade as they could get a little vague ! at 150 mph when fully loaded.

Hi,

Standard ECU / chip as far as I know. Strangely, the fan is now working normally and I have not had the A/C re-gassed. Looking through the extensive service history, this intermittent problem was reported previously, but no fault found.

It's your aircon 100%

Mine did it after the pipe from the compressor to the condenser fractured and leaked it all out.

Once fixed and re-gassed all was rosy in the world and once more quiet.

Hi folks,

Had the A/C tested by cooling engineer. He used a vaccum pump to purge the system and tested to see it would hold the vaccum for 5 mins. This test is not always done, but it tests all the valves in the system and there are no blockages. He then added a volume of gas by weight, plus some U/V die. So far everything is tickety-boo and I am enjoying ice cold A/C.

The original engine cooling fan fault has also been resolved. Thanks for all of your help and advice.
