In a bid to free myself from the Vauxhall Signum I bought (yes, I know), and looking for something a bit 'different' I am sorely tempted by a C30 either 1.6 or 2.0 diesel as I do around 20K - 25K a year in commuting and private mileage.

I won't be buying new but was thinking 2 or 3 year old with maybe up to £50K miles.

I have fallen out of love with the Signum due to EGR valve issues and other error codes and I am wondering if I am jumping out of the frying pan so to speak.

I understand that the 72K mile service is a big one and Volvo dealers charge upwards of 1K due to replacement of DPF and cambelt.

Is there anything else I should know?

I would also be pleased to hear if peeps were delighted or disappointed in the ownership experience.

Also, is the 1.6 Diesel just too underpowered?

I've recently bought a V50 D4, but test drove a 1.6 Drive-e and also tried a C30 D4 (if only it had a sensible boot). Although I wasn't focussing too much on the performance aspect of the 1.6 it seemed more than reasonable certainly for most normal usage. Obviously the C30 D4 was a different league.

I too would love to hear some feedback on the C30, its a good looking car and the official mpg figures for the stop start option are impressive, is this born out in reality?

Wife has the C30 1.6D Drive .... pretty much normal driving, short runs to and from work with occasional trip to shops see about 56 MPG. WHen we do a longer motorway run it can easily hit 70-72, it doesnt like 70+ tho due to the lack of 6th gear so if your cruise at 80 that will drop to about 62-63.

We find it more than adequate for poterring about.

I recently got an '09 C30 D5 having test driven 1.6, 2.0 and D5 diesels. Moved from a Vauxhall Corsa myself and very impressed with the C30 overall. The 1.6 would be ok for around town but for motorway miles the 2.0 diesel struck me as a strong all-rounder but my heart took over in the end hence the more powerful D5!

I read about the DPF/cambelt on Golf + A3 diesels etc I looked at too so decided it'd be part + parcel of having the car when it reaches that age/mileage.

Doesn't quite fit the remit as 'dog compatible' surely Alan?
The boot is rather high, some sort of hoist may be required.

I thought I may have resolved that issue by letting the dog in over the (dropped) back seat via the driver's door and it would have worked except the seat base wasn't entirely covered by the seat back when its down so it would have ruined the rear seat squab in no time.

I have replaced the Signum now but I daren't tell you with what.

Hmmm, from your Assleaflet comment it may be worse, much worse. You may have purchased the car my dad was going to buy till i convinced him he may not have quite died yet.....

Please tell me you haven't......

PS V50 isn't bad and the T5 version is peanuts to buy. The D2.0 was very good, though TBH i found the real Ford Focus better to drive and use if less pleasant looking inside.

Dad bought a V50 2.0D then changed his mind a swapped for 2.0 petrol.
(Personally i preferred the 2.0D).
