I noticed my rear near side brake was overheating, so suspected the caliper was sticking. I stripped the brake, cleaned all rust off, cleaned and lubed the slides, retracted the piston, which seems to move ok now.
The problem is now both sides seem to be making scraping noises off and on, which usually goes away after reversing for a few feet. I can't see rust or obstructions on the back plate where the noises seem to be coming from. I haven't had time to take the disks off to look at the drum brake side of things yet (12 hour night shifts), but could the noise be coming from the drum brakes? I have read that the shoes can be problematic on these cars. It is a 2001 V70, age of shoes unknown.

I'm unsure if the P1 and P2 share the same rear brake set up but my P1 has similar issues. It will very randomly start to "whine" from the n/s/r, more so when the car is weighted to that side... much like a bearing noise. It first occured about a month ago after 200 miles on the motorway. I pulled over and the n/s/r brake was smoking. I jacked the car up, wheel off and spung the disc... no resistance. I then used a hammer and knocked the drum and the caliper thinking it could just be the shoes that had stuck. I then carried on and did 1,500 miles without issues.

Back home, I stripped the rear calipers, cleaned and regreased the pads, pistons, slides and fitted new pins and retaining springs. I also removed the disc, cleaned up the edges with the grinder, stripped the shoes, checked, cleaned and greased the adjustors and dressed the leading edge of the shoes. I rebuilt it, adjusted them and all was well for a couple of weeks. Last week it did it again, same high pitched whine... worse when turning to the right at speed and again, brakes overheating.

I had a look again and found where the handbrake cable outer sheath fits into the arm/hub... is loose. On the drivers side however, it's fitted tightly and thus the outer sheath cannot move (I assume the end of the outer cable is like a taper, it fits snuggly into the frame?) So, all I can assume is the n/s/r cable had broken away and at times is moving and thus pulling the cable on that side only and hence, dragging the shoes slightly. I gave it a wiggle and tried to seat it as it should be and touch would, it's been fine so far but I suspect a new cable may solve my issues.

Not saying this is the same for yours, but perhaps check the cables where they enter into the rear hubs/brake assembly and see if you can move them. From what I can tell, the outer cable should fit securely into the hub and shouldn't move. If it does, I suspect that's the source of the problem. Perhaps!

Cheers Davie, I'll keep that in mind. It sounds for all the world like there is a piece of metal or rust caught somewhere out of sight, but being dragged against the disk. Imagine spinning the disk and placing a screwdriver on the rusty edge. It is that sort of noise. A quick reverse or change of direction can stop the noise.
I'm going to take the disk/drum off tomorrow, and I'm half expecting bits of shoe and spring to fall out hehe

Edited to add, I have new shoes ordered but haven't had a look due to weather pissing down.

At the risk of replying to myself, I pulled the rear brakes apart today. Near side was OK but shoes very worn. Offside was a mess. Both shoe retaining springs had worked loose and were rattling around the drum gouging into the shoe braking material etc. Shoes and springs a total mess. Thankfully no other damage, all I need to do is replace shoes and spring sets. I have the spring set, but am still waiting for the shoes, which should arrive tomorrow. If they don't, I have to drive to and from work with no handbrake for four days and go to a funeral before I can get time to replace them.

All fixed now !

ETA Again. I had to Dremel the new shoes to get some clearance to fit the new shoes. The old ones were Ferodo, the new ones were Bendix. I was damned if I could see a difference between the two types laid on top of each other, but the Dremel was needed.
