Ok so on one of my inspections (2004 2.5T AWD) I notice that the tyres will need replacing soon - tread depth is just over 2mm and wearing evenly - slightly more on the inside.

I then greased the steering stops and noticed this - tyre has no rubber and metal cording exposed (exactly the same on the other side!)

Any ideas what caused this ?

Thats a strange one.

In the second picture, the rubber on the lower of the sipe, is being torn away and to the inside.

Perhaps towing in ?

looks like there's too much toe out looking at the pictures. smile

Possibly hitting a bolt or something on full lock?

My S60 was wearing in the same place when I got it (although thankfully not as bad as that). It was the lower suspension arm bushes - as I understand it, worn bushes allow the geometry to change under acceleration and uneven wear results.

I would say get tracking looked at.

When I got my V70, it munched through a set of front tyres in about 2k miles. (except it was wearing the outside instead)

I took it to my garage and they ajusted the tracking (which they said was miles out!) and it stopped wearing the edge out.

How does it feel to drive? Mine was ok in the dry but trecherous in the wet with bad tracking.

This is exactly the same wear that's happening on the front tyres of my Ibiza Cupra.
Its not quick wear though, been happening for a while now.

I'll be watching this thread for ideas.

An update

I contacted Kumho about the wear and their technical manager said it was probably alignment (toe)

This proved to be correct as on a Hunter 4 wheel alignment the front toe was way out

Previous set of tyres wore fine so still took me by surprise though!

ditto for my MY05 v70, tracking sorted it out. Volvo main dealer charged about £90 for full alignment which whilst not cheap, is a long term gain when tyres are £200 + a set. I now get15k miles from a set rather than 3 smile
