Just sold my volvo S70R auto which was superb although I got fedup with the constant visits to the pumps.Average consumption over the period I owned it was 23mpg although most of my driving was to work and back a mix of B road and town traffic.

Now im considering its replacement but if for instance I go for a manual bm 523,323 can i expect any better economy or about the same.I have also seen a decent but cheap audi a3 1.8T sport.

Im aiming for about 30mpg avg with a bit more on longer runs.

As always thoughts & advice very welcome.

The bmw's i dont think you would gain anything, but my experience is from a 330, so you may get a touch more out of a smaller engine one.

How about a 330 diesel ?

The audi, you might get toward 30mpg.

I get about 24mpg out of my C70 T5, thats a manual.

Dad gets 26mpg out of his S70R thats an auto.

Mine does alot of town driving, his more out on the open road.

You will get more without doubt with a 1.8t Audi - As for the beemer - I've driven my mate's E39 523i and it's utter ste - gutless to the extreme - you'd be better off with a 525i with the same engine but more power - the problem with the 523 is that you gun the living st out of it everywhere making it not very economic -

I liken it to the old Volvo 300 series - The 1.7 was more economic than the 1.4 because the 1.4 was so gutless and needed thrashing everywhere.

Realitically a modern diesel is the way to go - in fairness though the (relatively old) V70 classic 2.5 TDI with the VAG 2.5 5pot aga under the bonnet is not half bad performance wise - 140bhp and 35mpg around town in my mate's r-plate auto (also available in the cheap as chips old shape Audi A6). I suppose a D5 is the one to go for if you want economy and you like yor pleasures swedish. Problem I have is once you've had the comfort of a Volvo you're left wanting in most other cars
