Hi. My scruffy old 940 estate has let me down at last. It is a Turbo estate, with manual (M90) transmission. There is no drive in any gear. My wife was driving it at the point of failure; tells me that the gearchange became "lumpy" and then, a couple of turns later, no drive.

It seems that the clutch is operating correctly, the gearbox is turning when clutch released (cannot change gear without clutch disengaged), but nothing further from there.

I've been underneath and found that the propshaft is still attached (!), and is not turning when in-gear with power applied.

I realise that, whatever happens, the 'box is coming out. I'm just interested if there are any suggestions as to what might be wrong. If, for instance, the likely failure mode is a 'major lunching' of the gearbox internals, I ought to just try to find a recon' 'box now. If there's a removable output shaft which fails, however, I wonder if that might be worth investigating further?

Any insight gratefully received - thanks!

Does it have overdrive skw? If so, either the internal clutches or the input shaft have failed, hence the reason for no drive.

Hi. Thanks for that. It is the later (M90) box, so no overdrive. According to various volvo experts, M90 gearboxes never fail smile

Well, I have to say it is most unusual. I have serviced these cars with monstrous mileages on them and the worst I have seen on the gearbox was a bit of synchro wear. I cannot recall a total failure like that.

The nice thing is that you can pick up a second hand 'box from a breaker for next to nothing, and that's you back on the road.

Indeed. Just got to get a Haynes manual so that I can get the order of battle right. For some reason I can't seem to find a step-by-step for a gearbox removal online.

I believe the M90 gearbox cars are fitted with a dual mass flywheel. You might want to factor that into your repair plan. Don't want to whip it all apart at the weekend to find that knackered and have the car off the road even longer.

Good thing about the RWD volvos is a gearbox swap is a quick job!

SKW, I have the factory manual in my hard drive. If you e mail me your chassis and engine no. I'll mail you the relevant pages for gearbox removal.
