Well, I've just had a big let down from my Volvo S60 2.0L T. It's got 65,000 miles on the clock, FSH and one owner. Inside and outside it looks as though it's been very well looked after.

I bought it on friday and have done about 100 miles in it with no trouble. I've been quite in love, actually! I could go on all day about all the good things I like about the car - but thats not whats on my mind at the moment.

I was just driving to work last night when the 'Performance Reduced' message came up on the dashboard. The throttle was cutting out at around 3000rpm, presumably to stop me damaging the engine as it had detected some fault. I limped down a dual carriageway into a parking bay, where I switched the engine off. When I turned it on again the engine managment light was showing and the warning triangle was illuminated in orange and the idle had become very lumpy sounding and the needle was bouncing around over 1000rpm.

I managed to skilfully slide my way in to work on time by using downhill momentum to make up time I'd lost and I've left the car off for 9 hours overnight. When I started it up this morning the screen said "service required" and the engine light and warning light were still lit. However, I drove it home very carefully. I've checked the manual which seems to indicate that it's an emissions fault (as indicated by the 'engine' light being illuminated). Does anyone have any ideas what might be up?

As I've not had the car a week I'll be ringing the dealer this morning and asking him to come and get the car collected and hopefully fixed. I just want it sorted, really as soon as possible. He has a nice Clio 172 that I'll take off his hands if the Volvo is fked beyond repair, but I really want to keep the Volvo, because it's so amazing when it's not breaking. The 100 miles I covered before the fault arose really were excellent.

I hope my Volvo ownership hasn't ended before it's got off the ground! cry

Thats what i would guess.

Or a turbo hose has popped off, that will give an erratic idle and be well down on power.

I've just spoken to the dealer who is going to come down with an autoelectrician to have a look at it now, get a fault code from it and take it back to his garage to get it fixed. I just want the car back running so I can A) go to work and B) continue to enjoy it like I was.

So, the dealer has came and collected the car. He used a diagnostic tool whilst the car was on my drive and recovered a fault code for the throttle position sensor. He's took the car back to the dealership (it still has the warning lights on but isn't driving in performance reduced mode now).

Having opened it up, the faulty part has been identified as a Magneti Marelli throttle body. They've since ceased trading and Bosch now make the part, which has been ordered from Germany. Unfortunately, that means I'm looking at the possiblity that my car won't be ready until thursday or friday. Once thats sorted though I'm hoping it'll be all smiles on the road again and I can get back to enjoying my luxurious barge!

As an aside, because I've only bought the car on friday and the dealer is liable for the faults that have occured, is there any requirement for him to provide with a loan car/hire car until mine is working again? I'll be stuck for getting work and I'll likely have to fork out for a taxi otherwise.

Bosch make the maf, (air sensor).

Magneti Marelli throttle body, you can buy new from volvo, but it needs coding to the car by volvo, or it will run in limp mode all the time.

http://www.bba-reman.com/content.aspx?content=volv... that's the unit, a white sticker, says its an original part, a yellow means its been replaced already.

Have you phoned the dealer to tell them what has happened to the car ?

Magneti Marelli havent ceased trading, as they supply electronics to f1\moto gp\bsb\wsb, like upto the weekend just gone, on a certain Mr Rossi's bike. biggrin

I haven't spoken to Volvo yet. I'll see how the upcoming efforts to sort the car go. If it has to go to Volvo to have the new parts coded then at least I won't be paying for it!

If it were any other car I'd be tempted to let it go, but I am confident this problem can be sorted out and I can get back to enjoying myself. After all, it is an amazing car.

This is a well known and documented fault on the 2.4s (google ETM failure and you'll see what I mean) - I didn't know it was the same on the 2.0s.

It's no big deal and a doddle for them to swap out, just needs to be coded to the car which is why it must be done by a dealer with the right software.

Our old V70 has had the MAF and the ETM done (they all go). Things to check and, if the dealer is feeling sorry for himself (!), make sure the top engine mount is in good order.

Is it an Auto? If so you'd be well advised to flush the oil - easy to do at home and will prolong the life of the box - don't believe the "sealed for life" pitch. Again, if you google "Gibbons method volvo geabox flush" or soemthing like that, there is a guy in the states who came up with a very easy way of DIY'ing this.

I've spoken to the dealer again this morning who has been in touch with a Volvo specialist about getting the part coded when it is fitted. Still looking as though thursday will be the day for the car being fixed, which isn't ideal as I'm at work in the afternoon then. Still, the sooner the car is fixed the better!

It looks as though the S60 will be coming back today. I rang my insurer today as the dealer agreed to lend me the MX5 I had traded in for the Volvo until the Volvo was fixed. My insurer couldn't get me insurance on it, stating that because it was now owned by a company and not me, I wasn't eligible for insurance on it!

Luckily though, it looks as though the S60 will be back this evening and I'll be giving it a good run around to make sure everything is settled in nicely. Fingers crossed!

It seems as though there is a happy ending to this story. The ETM was replaced free of charge by the dealer and the car has came back to me just fine. I've done about 250 miles in it since it came back with no trouble, fingers crossed thats it for good now and I can just get on enjoying this amazing car!
