We bought a new desktop CNC machine at work, which should cut aluminium, so I thought I'd make up a new dash for the Chimaera. The plan was to go all digital with a dsPIC looking after everything, such as 7 segment LED speedometer, 4x20 LCD, LED bar graph for temp, oil, etc, and a big row of LEDs for the rev counter.

However, I just had a few thoughts on what I need on there by law, i.e., to get through the MOT. I'm sure I'll need a warning light for main beam and fogs, but is there anything else?

Do I need a mileometer?

Drew,

That's commonly referred to as an odometer. Don't know if you need one, but for resale in Canada and the USA. I presume, when trying to sell a vehicle in the UK, you also need to show mileage.

Did you go through with the experiment?

Unfortunately I've not had time yet. Possibly looking at selling the car next year, because I don't have time to keep on top of all the little jobs it needs.

There are some nice single board computers due out in November. If I was going to re-do the dash now I'd probably use one of these and a couple of 7" LCD touch screens.

I hope you manage to keep it, but wish you good luck either way. You could always do a dash while the old one's still in the car.

Best,
