I have just bought the above, intend to rebuild it as a track car, however keeping an eye on construction regs with a view to making it eligibility to a variety of race series, as many as possible keeping in mind the compromises that I will almost certainly have to make will narrow choices considerably.

Presumably if money was no object one could just build as per the FIA rule book, however I will have to decide which series I would like to realistically aim at.

The car came with the original Essex V6, quite a lot of running gear has already been replaced with Cosworth items, 7" LSD, half shafts, AP calipers and disks an modern alloys, so the car is already modified from standard. Engine choice will either be modified Essex V6, modern V6 (Duratec or Cosworth v6) or most likely small block ford V8. I will also be adding a fuel cell and cage later on.

Will be looking at track days to start with, maybe moving on to sprinting then a race series, no idea which as yet, hence trying to keep the car design fairly flexible and open.

I will try and maintain the absolute minimum required to keep the car road legal, however will trailer it any real distance.

The mods already carried out will probably already narrow the choices, any advice would be welcome.

Eric Stahler.

If your going to run it in historics its going to have to go back to more original parts.

If you run it in the TVR series everything that you've got would be fine.

If you pop over to mallory park on the 18th july I think John Simpson is racing his very rapid 3000m with the tvr series, and he would be a good place to start as he races in both classic series and the TVR series.

IIRC he runs an essex V6 with triple carbs and lots of power !!

Cheers

for essex tuning speak to John Wade and Ric Wood. Be worth speaking to Iain Daniels Classic Motorsport 01530 515300 too as they prep a lot of TVRs for the circuits and lots of other Essex powered racers too (Marcos etc)

TVR Sprint Championship has a 3 litre threshold. If you "V8" it (either Rover or 302) you'll go into the over 3 litre class in will all the "new stuff" .... ok for fun but not viable if you want to compete ...

There are better engine people than Ric Wood and John Wade. Not so much in terms of ability but certainly in terms of Making your money go alot further!!

I was hoping someone might say that, the Ric Wood engines look fantastic, I got the impression they would not be cheap, pray tell who else you would recommend?

Erich,

Firstly, congratulations!

Secondly, if you decide on the SBF V8 and wish to modify that motor for racing, the cossie parts will be throw aways. You can easily and safely do 530+ flywheel HP and ~440 TQ with a stock (two bolt main) 5.0 block @ 331CI.

Hi Slow M,

The route I am most liekley to be taking is tuned Essex V6, if I can get around 250bhp without spending a fortune, with the intention of making the car eligible for classics series, which means I need to keep a lot of the running gear fairly standard.

I have the Cosworth diff and modified TVR hub carriers to suit, which should be ok for that kind of power but no good for classics series. ok for TVR Challenge. Looks like I will have to find a complete Sailsbury setup with hubs and drive shafts now, what's left of original rear suspension is TR6 splined sliding shafts and no diff!
