Im considering spending what i consider is a lot of money upgrading my T5 box with the CTS upgrade kit.

If i take the plunge in a year or so for an LS conversion in my Chim, will i be able to mate the T5 box to the LS?

Doubtful. SBC t5's have a different length input shaft. You could get an sbc t5 bell housing and save that for a rainy day.

I've got an uprated CTS T5 gearbox from my Cerbera which is now mated to an LS in my Cerbera......

Steve Heath and Dave Wallis used the Cerbera bellhousing (although there are different bellhousings)and an adapterplate.

Do not know if the Chimaera T5 is different.

Not convinced that little dinky box will take loads of tuned LS drag starts, it is around half the size of my TKO, i had em side by side.

Its not how big it is, its how you use it... biggrin

I believe the CTS uprated T5 can take heaps of abuse and still have the very quick gearchange.
Even with an LS in there it should last a long time imo.
Only 1 way to find out.....

yes they've been taking years of abuse in the Tuscan series with no ill effect, and they are all pushing well north of 400 lb/ft torque as is mine.

Thats the ultimate aim.
99% of the cars driving will be under 350 lb NA.
Most drag strip fun will push 450-500 on the gas as i chip away at the ETs and also concentate on winning races and keeping the car in good enough shape to drive home.
At the end of a the season i may turn everything up to 11 and push for a special 1/4 mile time.

Except that's not actually true though. I broke a CTS uprated box 2 or three times in the Tuscan series (standard AJP race Tuscan), although to be fair one of those breakages was as a result of a botched down change. Even with the CTS box, I never went to a race without a spare in the truck. Darren Dowling, in contrast, had a CTS box that went for years with no issues.

When I switched from an AJP8 to an LS6 (and now LS3) in my Sagaris, I didn't for a moment consider sticking with the T5. I looked at alternatives from Hewland and X-trac before choosing a Holinger (rated for 650 lb ft for endurance racing).

The most common fault on the two GTF built LS Sagaris race cars has been gearbox failures of one description or another. One uses a Promaster sequential, the other Elite. The Promasters have had numerous breakages in these cars (but successfully completed a 2.5 hour race this weekend in Steve Glynn's car). The Elite, sadly has also had issues.

Personally I think CTS T5 is a failure waiting to happen in a race application with an LS. Road car maybe ok provided, depending on which engine you have and how you drive it.

I am 510lbs at the rear wheels, it took six teeth off the crown wheel last month! i have raceprooved drive shafts as i have done two standard ones in.
If it doesnt take the punishment its an expensive way to find out?

Bump.
I now have a turbo RV8 that's producing 458hp and 554 lb/ft torque. I realise the standard T5 may be on borrowed time which prevents me from using all that torque on offer and so would like to know the best option for an upgrade. Modify T5 or choose another box?
[With the response in 5th I keep going for another gear]!

Mac, after stripping third gear in my TKO600 aswell as smashing the standard shifter pads, i dont think the T5 has a chance..
I now have a shot peened and cryo'd third, and bronze shifter pads, but in fairness the box lasted three years before it gave up.
