I would have thought that the best place for this post would be the Griff forum.

Wouldn't copper painted black be even better?

Yes, copper is a better conductor, but ali is lighter.

I found the ali rad in mine made a huge difference - I had to put a 86 degree stat in just so it wouldn't run too cold in summer...

The old rad wasn't even watertight when I finally changed it. wink

The car ran fine on the old rad for many years, without overheating but at no time did it become necessary to put the 86 degree stat in it (even in winter) until the ali rad went in.

I should point out that I also upgraded the fan wiring at the same time as fitting the rad, and shortly after that fitted an aftermarket ECU that controls the fans, so it would be difficult to separate out all the benefits at this stage.

The performance of the rad isn't just down to the material its made out of or even its size.
You have to take into account the fin design, air side pressure drop and coolant pressure drop.
Once you have all of the above info you can make a judgement of which one is best.

i fitted the ali rad & have not had any problems at all, the temp does not tend to vary as much when compared to the standard rad. It can run cold at times though, but when giving it some beans on track the temp stayed very steady.

This was the experience when installing.

If it's a decent rad' it should also be a damn site lighter too. Not a major plus but it is weight right in the nose of the car and every little bit helps!

Hmm, four Kilo's is quite a weight saving. I've got my rad' with Newquay Radiators at this moment for an uprated recore. It's a three row with something in the region of eight additional cross tubes. In a previous post someone showed concern that the tubes may be more prone to clogging due to a reduction in their throat but in fact it is enlarged. This morning I asked if they could get a digital shot to me but they didn't have the facility so I'll post a pic of the finished item at the weekend.

Can the cross tubes of an alloy rad be weld repaired? At least with the copper items it's usually a soldering job. Anyway, £185 compares favourably with the £400 for the alloy replacement; comes with a two year guarantee.

O.k, this is the uprated rad'. Obviously it's not gonna look hugely different to the original. Well, not until you put them alongside and count the tubes. I'm told it'll work a treat! 'Kin 'ope so! smile

Don't hate me but you can get an alloy one for a good bit less than 400 quid if you know where to go!
