Ok, so as far as I can see all of the mechanical part of the TVR Power turbo kit comes en lieu of the Y-piece which includes the main cat on Chims and Griffs. So in fact you're de-catting the car at the same time - or are there any provisions made for cars that need to have a catalyst installed - not just pass emissions, but the cat need to be physically present - to remain road legal?

I think it''s a case of replacing for the MOT, unless some small sport type cats can be used in place of silencer scratchchin Expensive though.
Why, are you thinking of going for it?

I think Eann was looking at that but I'm not sure what he's doing at the moment since his accident.

It's ok replacing it at MOT time but if you get pulled at the roadside you are still for the highjump.
I'm sure VOSA keep themselves busy reading these type of websites so could be well aware of the amount of decatting that goes on. Having a defective cat is one thing but I'm not sure how you would fare with one deliberately removed.
That said, I'm not aware of anyone being pinched for it yet.

A customer of my main TVR man is, but if the whole thing needs to be put back to N/A with every MOT test... frankly I would vastly prefer major alterations of the mechanical layout of an existing car to be tested & certified for road autorities up front Tüv-style... if only to cover ones back for insurance and road traffic officers having a bad day.

Thought of the cat instead of center silencer idea... but by the sounds of it we'd be guinea pigs. Noise levels and whether the cat gets enough temperature in it to do its job when driving around in normal traffic would be big question marks. I can see such a project becoming an open ended sort of affair.

on my LS car, which has headers down the sides of the block not forwards, I've opted for cats behind the gearbox under the prop as part of the silencer. not ideal for getting them warm quickly for emissions, but they do work there.

Ta muchly thumbup The exhaust fabricating company that my TVR whisperer works with, has said that they might be able to do something like that, too... so it looks a possibility even though it's not the route I would choose personally (it's a std. 4 litre, LHD so no off the shelf S/C solution either, but lots of scope for a bigger/better naturally aspirated lump).

I should think the turbo option would help heat a cat further down the system.

Excellent, just a thought and someone already done it. Which cats did you use Steve?

i got some 200 cell 4 inch cats off an exhaust company. think they were around 100 each, plus the ends etc. a lot of the cobra chaps use cats in the first part of the side pipe as its about the only possible place to put them in those.

when i got the griff, it was one of the considerations, in that i wouldn't need cats in there....it does let the engine emit a nice sound don't you think

I got a spare Chimaera exhaust cut the box out and (badly - I can't weld for st)) welded in two flanges to install one of my cerbera cats, blocked off the second pipe and hoped this would see me through the MoT,

I was in the early days of figuring out my Megasquirt set up so was some way from gettng it to pass despite a load of fiddling. Would be interested to know if anyone has got.a pass with a single aftermarket CAT.

I was planning to get the local zorst place to weld in two sets of flanges to mount both Cerb cats so at least I have a good base from which to work with the tuning. I think they will both fit where the box used to be. Reminds me that I need to check this... This would be an MOT only exhaust and would be available for a lend if I get round to getting it made.

Without wanting to de-rail, while I think about it any suggestions for best set up for Cat emission test pass on ECU, currently running MAP based, would I be better off with TPS with wideband lamda correction enabled?

Oh and running two turbos, but a self build (not by me) which retains the same locationof Y piece to exhaust connection.

From what I understand, the law still isn't 100% about cats, which is why it looks at emissions. I'd like to know what your opinions are. Insurance companies will insure you decatted as a mod? I guess VOSA could still stuff you at the road side if pulled over by the police. However, I think they have their work cut out for them with dodgy HGV's.

However, bolting on a couple of cats in place of the exhaust sounds like a good compromise to me. Surely, the volume levels would only be the same as running catted and sleeved? Alternatively, would it not be possible to add a couple of short cherrybomb style silencers between the backbox and diff if you're worried about volume? It may require a litte alteration on the width of the exits from the box to allow them to clear the chassis main rails. Just a thought.
