Is it necessary to balance a new flywheel before you put it on? Or... can I just put it on. I bought as new LS7 flywheel.

Stick it straight on, all Ls stuff is zero balanced, chop and change flywheels and harmonic balancers all day long

there are differences between the ls flywheels though, the clutch covers and flywheels are not all interchangeable, so you will need to keep the cover and flywheel from the same style (though you might know that already)

I bought a LS7 clutchkit, so the coverplate should better fit!! The LS7 has a different style of flywheel, I know. Compared to the LS1, LS2.....

Yes, you must check the balancing. US "zero" is not as we expect it. I went for a Fidanza alu together with the GM LS7 clutch. Startet with the original GM flywheel, it's far to heavy for our light cars. per

You can just fit them normally , the std flywheel is spot on I would not fit a ally one as every one I've seen in a Ls has gone bad !! Std ls7 clutch kit is cheap / good for power just make sure the spigot is good and far enough on to the input shaft as there are different length bell housings

Hmmm, hadn't thought of this, my flywheel is bespoke, using the ap twin plate clutch so how would you go about balancing it?

either make sure each part is neutral balance, or balance as a whole, but better if neutral to prevent assembly errors.

Caseyj, how was your car delivered? Had a lot of problems after finishing. You did a lot yourself or not?

Normal procedure is balancing each part and then as a whole as SteveSPG says.
My LS7 clutch was 60grams out, and the Fidanza alu flywhel was 28g out. Balanced to 1.7g. Remarkable nicer and vibration free at rev after balancing.
Spot on from factory? Ha! This is mass production products where time is more important than accurancy. Pete500
