Anyone changed their fuel pump/filter arrangements?

I have just upgraded the fuel lines, pump and filter. I am trying to keep the pump where it is normally fitted and put the filter in line before the pump. Obviously not much room to play with!

Does it matter if the filter is higher than the base of the fuel tank, in its original position with the feed coming up the chassis to the filter and back down to the feed on the pump? Any alternative suggestions?
